Jan Tulk, the former well-respected Laboratory Counsel at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, has joined the board of directors of the Livermore Lab Foundation (LLF). The Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit, is dedicated to supporting science and research initiatives and STEM education at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, serving as a key philanthropic partner for public and private investments, grants and gifts.
Tulk, a native of Chicago and current Southern California resident, joined LLNL in 1985, as Assistant Laboratory Counsel.
In 1994, she assumed full responsibility for the department – reporting both to the Laboratory Director and the University of California General Counsel and managing 20 LLNL attorneys. In 2002, Tulk was named Associate Director, Administration and Human Resources, overseeing the Lab’s HR, Audit and Oversite, Industrial Partnerships, Public Affairs, Affirmative Action and Contract Management work, in addition to her legal portfolio. Tulk retired from LLNL in 2010, directly joining the management team at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, first as Chief of Staff to the Director and then as Senior Advisor. She retired from SLAC in 2022.
Prior to joining LLNL, Tulk served as the Deputy General Counsel and Assistant Deputy Director of the California Coastal Commission. She’s a graduate of University of California, Berkeley and San Francisco Law School.
“Jan Tulk is well-versed on the capabilities of LLNL and the significant opportunities to execute science in the national interest,” said Dona Crawford, LLF Board Chair. “Her multi-lab experience, strong University of California connections and knowledge of public-private and philanthropic partnership opportunities will be critical to helping our Foundation position for success in 2025.”
“It’s a privilege to support the outstanding work of the Foundation and the important philanthropic partnership role with Lawrence Livermore National Lab,” noted Tulk. “My career has been dedicated to the critical research and STEM workforce initiatives that exist at our national laboratories. I’m delighted that I can continue to champion Livermore as a foundation board member.”
Founded in 2016, the Livermore Lab Foundation is a 501c3 philanthropic organization dedicated to advancing fundamental science and research initiatives, STEM education initiatives and student fellowships at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
LLF’s top research initiatives in 2025 include supporting fusion energy innovation and research following LLNL’s groundbreaking achievement of ignition in 2022; applying the Lab’s computational modeling capabilities and machine learning to better understand and treat neurodegenerative diseases and advancing climate science and resiliency to address the nation’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
