Since 2018, the Livermore Lab Foundation (LLF) has partnered with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) to provide high school students an opportunity to explore STEM careers through hands-on science and engineering projects. In July 2022, under the guidance of Laboratory mentors, students participated in a two-week virtual workshop that included collaborating on a scientific research team, touring LLNL facilities, and presenting their work at a virtual showcase event. The goal of this program is to inspire high schoolers in our community to explore their interest and passion for STEM education through world-class research at LLNL. This summer, we are pleased to have welcomed eleven students interested in STEM from three different Livermore High Schools.
To highlight the student’s work, a virtual gathering was held to celebrate the students, learned more about their research projects, and recognize the programs LLNL mentors. We are honored to have partnered with LLNL and LVJUSD to ‘open the door’ to world class mentors and science opportunities for these such an aspiring scientists and engineers!
LLNL leadership and support behind this program, comes from Terri DeLima, who established this mentorship opportunity in 2018 with support from the Livermore Lab Foundation.
“This is the 4th year we have provided this program to local high school students, and I am always amazed by how much the students grow during the 2-week workshop. The passion they show for their projects and the bond created with their mentors is inspiring! Personally, I recommend more employers explore high school internships or workshops in their place of business; it is extremely rewarding to mentor and make a difference in a young person’s life, encouraging them to pursue higher education and possible future employees. Big thank you to all the donors that contributed to LLF to help fund all the supplies for our students, we couldn’t do it without your support!”
LLF would like to give a special thanks to LLNL supervisors and staff who dedicated their time and support to this year’s program. We also extend our gratitude to LVJUSD’s Former Superintendent, Dr. Kelly Bowers, who advocated for STEM education and program opportunities in the Livermore Valley.
