On Wednesday, August 10, 2022, the Livermore Lab Foundation (LLF) hosted its third-annual virtual Summer SLAM – Special Edition. Since 2018, the Foundation has partnered with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) to recognize top presenters at the Lab’s annual poster symposium. This year, the Lab hosted approximately 650 summer research student interns. Over 250 students participated in the Lab’s virtual poster sessions.
Top students from each directorate (Computing, Engineering, Global Security, NIF and Photon Science, Physical and Life Sciences, and Weapons and Complex Integration) were chosen to present at LLF’s Summer SLAM – Special Edition. These students were selected by their mentors and senior leaders for their exceptional work and presentations, showcasing the depth and breadth of the Lab’s world-class science and technology. The event featured student presentations with opportunities for Q&A from the audience of current and former Lab staff, mentors, community leaders, and others.
The Foundation would like to acknowledge the leadership and support of Dr. Joanna Albala, Manager of the Lab’s Science Education Program, for making this event possible.
We would like to recognize Mike Carter, LLF Board Director and retired Program Director for Department of Defense Technology Programs, who provided individual feedback to the students on their presentations and their resumes. Each student will receive a copy of the science communication book, Championing Science, written by Amy Aines and Roger Aines. Learning how to present research in a compelling, easy to understand manner is a critical skill. Mike’s advice will help the students as they continue their academic and scientific journey and transition into the workforce.
Over 100 guests tuned in to the live event to hear from students about their research findings and insights on their summer Lab experiences, and to ask questions of these future STEM leaders.
