LLF Supports Local High School Graduates in Collaboration with LLNL's Girls Who Code Program

This summer, LLF welcomed three young college students as Early Internship Program Fellows at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Selected students were recent graduates from Livermore and Tracy area high schools and active members of their schools’ Girls Who Code chapters. The Early Internship Program, new this year, is a collaboration between LLF, LLNL and Girls Who Code, and seeks to strengthen the pipeline of women into Computer Science degrees and STEM careers. This year’s Fellows included: Rebecca Munzar who is majoring in Mathematics at Pepperdine University, Harshitha Sarathy who is majoring in Computer Science at UC Santa Cruz, and Maili Malabey who is majoring in Computer Science at San Jose State.

Together, Rebecca, Harshitha, and Maili spent 10 weeks working as a team with Lab researchers to analyze digital logic and circuitry. Their summer project explored the intricacies of electrical circuit design and how that design directly supports mathematical purposes and calculations, extended memory storing capabilities, and more complicated computing programs. The fellowship introduced all three college students to a broad community of summer students, encouraged meaningful connections with other LLF Fellows, and provided them with significant hands-on research and networking opportunities at the Lab.

The Early Internship Program Fellowship is just one of many STEM opportunities offered by LLF that connect aspiring young scientists and engineers with Livermore Lab’s premier resources and mentors. The Foundation provides fellowships and research stipends to foster the academic and professional journey of undergraduate and graduate students, with a focus on those historically underrepresented in the field, low-income/financial need, and/or first-generation college students. Applications for summer 2025 fellowships will open November 2024. Check the Foundation’s STEM webpage for information about fellowships, learn about Fellow alumni, and stay informed of upcoming opportunities: https://livermorelabfoundation.org/stem/

LLF fellowships are made possible through academic and organizational partnerships and the generous tax-deductible donations of sponsors, businesses and individuals.
